In comparison to traditional cylindrical interbody devices, the LT-CAGE® Lumbar Tapered Fusion Device restores lordosis and sagittal balance with significantly less reaming of the vertebral endplates. And Medtronic Sofamor Danek's Tapered Laparoscopic Instruments are designed to easily and reproducibly place the LT-CAGE® Device.

Features and Benefits
The LT-CAGE® Device offers the following features and benefits:
  • Provides anatomic restoration of lordosis and sagittal balance with maximum vertebral endplate preservation - requires 50% less endplate reaming than cylindrical constructs.
  • Incorporates large openings to maximize area for bony ingrowth.
  • Incorporates truncated (flat) sides, which require less dissection, retraction, and exposure.
  • consistent, reproducible placement when implanted utilizing Medtronic Sofamor Danek's instruments.
Indications
The LT-CAGE® Lumbar Tapered Fusion Device is indicated for spinal fusion procedures in skeletally mature patients with degenerative disc disease (DDD) at one level from L2-S1, and may also have up to Grade 1 spondylolisthesis or retrolisthesis at the involved level. The LT-CAGE® Device is to be used with autogenous bone graft and implanted by way of a laparoscopic or open anterior approach. Patients receiving the LT-CAGE® Device should have had at least six months of nonoperative treatment prior to treatment with the LT-CAGE® Device. In addition, the LT-CAGE® Device should not be implanted in patients with an active infection at the operative site or with an allergy to titanium or titanium alloy.

Laparoscopic Surgery
As indicated, the LT-CAGE® Device is to be implanted utilizing a laparoscopic or open anterior approach. Because of the special instrumentation utilized to perform laparoscopic spinal surgery, such as Medtronic Sofamor Danek's Tapered Laparoscopic Instruments, this approach only requires a small incision (approximately 10mm).

For the patient, laparoscopic surgery may offer the following benefits:

  • Less tissue damage and muscle loss;
  • A significantly smaller incision than what is required for a traditional open approach, which, in turn, presents less risk of morbidity and improved cosmetic results; and
  • Reduced hospital stay and recuperation time. Patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery are hospitalized for just under two days versus the up to six-day stay required for patients undergoing open surgery.

Medtronic Sofamor Danek's Tapered Laparoscopic Instruments - one of the latest advancements in minimally invasive surgery - are designed to easily and reproducibly place the LT-CAGE® Device. For the surgeon, these instruments offer the following features and benefits:

  • Integrated seal system to prevent loss of insufflation.
  • Color-coded instruments and cases that clearly identify the size-specific instruments for each size of construct (14mm, 16mm, and 18mm).
  • Finned distraction tips that prevent migration of the distractor during insertion.
  • Sequential distraction for optimal disc space distraction and height restoration prior to endplate preparation.
  • Centering devices for bi-lateral construct placement utilizing a trephining method (annulotomy).
  • Easy-to-use adjustable depth stops that allow for accurate, controlled passage of instruments.
  • Integrated system design that facilitates stable, accurate placement of the construct and facilitates a consistent, reproducible operation.

Important Safety Information

It is important that you discuss the potential risks, complications, and benefits of the LT-CAGE® with your doctor prior to receiving treatment, and that you rely on your physician's judgment. Only your doctor can determine whether you are a suitable candidate for this treatment.
